Description

A hearty and comforting casserole made with tender beef, caramelized onions, and gooey cheese, layered and baked to perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 2 large sweet yellow onions, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth (or vegetable broth for a vegetarian version)
  • 1 cup Gruyère or Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 4 slices crusty French bread (or cauliflower rice for a low-carb option)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked. Drain any excess fat.
  2. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Combine the caramelized onions with the beef, adding garlic powder, thyme, pepper, and beef broth. Stir well and let simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. In a greased casserole dish, layer half of the sliced bread, followed by the beef mixture, and then sprinkle with cheese. Repeat the layers, finishing with cheese on top.
  5. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Notes

For extra texture, top with toasted breadcrumbs before baking. This casserole can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated.
