Description

Deliciously chewy and warm Homemade New York-Style Bagels, perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups Bread Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Yeast (instant or active dry)
  • 2 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups Warm Water
  • Toppings (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, etc.)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine bread flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Pour in warm water and stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  2. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise for about 60 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down the dough and divide it into eight equal pieces. Roll each into a ball, poke a hole in the center, and shape into bagels.
  5. Boil a large pot of water, adding a little sugar. Carefully drop in bagels for about 1–2 minutes each side.
  6. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Place boiled bagels on a lined baking sheet, add toppings, and bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

For best results, boil the bagels in batches to avoid overcrowding. Consider brushing with an egg wash before baking for a golden finish.
