Description

A cozy dessert made with stale bread soaked in a rich custard and topped with luscious caramel sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups stale French bread or brioche, cubed
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk (or almond milk)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup caramel sauce, plus more for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cut the stale bread into bite-sized cubes and place in a large bowl.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes and gently fold them together.
  5. Let the mixture sit for about 15 to 30 minutes to soak.
  6. Drizzle some caramel sauce into the mixture and stir gently.
  7. Transfer to a greased baking dish and bake for about 45 to 50 minutes, until set and golden brown.
  8. Let cool slightly, then drizzle with additional caramel sauce before serving.

Notes

For optimal soaking, use day-old bread and allow it to rest in the custard long enough before baking. Mix in chocolate chips or nuts if desired.
