Description
A cozy dessert made with stale bread soaked in a rich custard and topped with luscious caramel sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 cups stale French bread or brioche, cubed
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk (or almond milk)
- 1 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
- 1 cup granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup caramel sauce, plus more for drizzling
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cut the stale bread into bite-sized cubes and place in a large bowl.
- In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes and gently fold them together.
- Let the mixture sit for about 15 to 30 minutes to soak.
- Drizzle some caramel sauce into the mixture and stir gently.
- Transfer to a greased baking dish and bake for about 45 to 50 minutes, until set and golden brown.
- Let cool slightly, then drizzle with additional caramel sauce before serving.
Notes
For optimal soaking, use day-old bread and allow it to rest in the custard long enough before baking. Mix in chocolate chips or nuts if desired.
