- 4 large egg whites
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
- Green food coloring (optional)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°F (93°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a clean mixing bowl, beat the egg whites on medium speed until frothy.
- Sprinkle in the cream of tartar and salt, and continue to beat until soft peaks form.
- Gradually add granulated sugar, one tablespoon at a time, and beat until stiff peaks form.
- Gently fold in the vanilla extract and optional green food coloring.
- Pipe the meringue into tree shapes on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 1.5 to 2 hours until dry. Allow to cool completely before removing from the baking sheet.
Notes
For a vegan version, substitute egg whites with aquafaba in a 3:1 ratio. Try adding flavor extracts like almond or peppermint.
