Description

Delicious apple crumb bars featuring a buttery topping and a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg that evoke cozy memories of home.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free blend)
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, melted (or coconut oil for a vegan twist)
  • 4 cups apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (adjust based on sweetness preference)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (or arrowroot powder for gluten-free)


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9-inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, sugars, baking powder, and salt. Pour in the melted butter and mix until crumbly.
  3. Press half of the crumb mixture firmly into the bottom of the prepared pan and bake for about 10-12 minutes until lightly golden.
  4. In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch.
  5. Once the base is out of the oven, spread the apple mixture on top and sprinkle with the remaining crumb mixture.
  6. Bake for an additional 25-30 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly.
  7. Let the bars cool in the pan for at least 15 minutes before cutting into squares.

Notes

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or pair with tea. Can be made gluten-free and vegan.
