Description

A comforting and indulgent dessert that transforms stale bread into a rich, custardy delight with chocolate chips.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups stale bread, cut into cubes
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • Salt (a pinch)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly toast the bread cubes on a baking sheet for about 10 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until well combined.
  3. Add the toasted bread and chocolate chips to the custard mixture, gently stir until coated, and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
  4. Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until set and golden brown.
  5. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving warm, optionally with cream or ice cream.

Notes

For added flavor, consider mixing in spices like cinnamon or nutmeg. Use day-old bread for the best texture.
