- 1 lb ground meat (beef, turkey, or chicken)
- 1 head green cabbage, chopped
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 yellow onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup uncooked long-grain rice
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp Italian herbs
- Red pepper flakes, to taste
- 2 cups water
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat some olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until soft.
- Add the ground meat and cook until browned, breaking up big chunks.
- Stir in chopped cabbage and cook until slightly wilted, about 5 minutes.
- Pour in the tomato sauce and add uncooked rice. Mix well and add water according to rice package instructions.
- Season with salt, pepper, paprika, Italian herbs, and red pepper flakes as desired.
- Cover and let it simmer on low heat for 20-25 minutes until the rice is fluffy and the flavors meld together.
- Top with fresh herbs like parsley or basil before serving.
Notes
Use fresh, crisp cabbage for a tender texture. For a vegetarian version, substitute ground meat with lentils or chickpeas.
