Description

A comforting dessert made from stale bread and a rich custard, topped with creamy vanilla sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups stale bread, cubed
  • 2 cups milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • A pinch of salt
  • Butter for greasing

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish with butter or oil.
  2. In a bowl, combine the milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Whisk until well blended.
  3. Toss the cubed bread into the liquid mixture and allow it to soak for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Pour the mixture into the greased baking dish and spread evenly.
  5. Bake for 45 minutes or until set and golden brown on top.
  6. While baking, prepare the vanilla sauce by simmering 1 cup of milk with 1/4 cup of sugar. Thicken with cornstarch mixed with cold water and add a splash of vanilla.
  7. Let the bread pudding cool slightly before serving with warm vanilla sauce drizzled on top.

Notes

For variations, consider adding nuts or dried fruits. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
