Description

A cozy comfort dessert made from stale bread soaked in rich custard and drizzled with sweet vanilla sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups stale bread, cut into cubes
  • 2 cups whole milk (or almond/coconut milk)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • Optional: cinnamon and nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Toss bread cubes with melted butter in a large bowl.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together eggs, sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
  4. Pour the custard over the bread cubes and stir until well soaked.
  5. Transfer to a greased baking dish and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until golden and set.
  6. For the vanilla sauce, combine 1 cup milk, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1 tablespoon vanilla in a saucepan and heat until warm.
  7. Serve warm, drizzled with the vanilla sauce.

Notes

Use stale bread for the best texture. Let the bread soak up the custard mixture and cover with foil if browning too quickly.
